Women of Trellix Discuss Visibility, Access and Opportunity
By Katie Ruiters, Kristin Eckels, Paola Chadwell and Trish Tobin · March 20, 2025
This International Women's Day and Women's History Month, we're focusing on the theme 'Accelerate Action' by highlighting the vital role of visibility, access, and opportunity for women. At Trellix, we're committed to fostering an environment where women not only have a seat at the table but are empowered to lead. We recognize the importance of mentorship and community through employee resource groups like Women's Voice and actively work to increase the representation of women, especially in fields like cybersecurity, where they currently hold only 25% of jobs globally. We believe 'you can't be what you can't see,' and we're dedicated to making women visible and creating a more equitable future for all.
We asked a few of our women leaders at Trellix to share their personal insights. Let’s hear from them.
Katie Ruiters, Sr. Manager, HR Business Partner:
As important as visibility is, I have struggled in the past to find authentic ways to increase my visibility at work. I had always believed that my hard work would speak for itself. I was uncomfortable seeking exposure or showcasing my work, as it goes against my humble nature. It has helped me tremendously to seek mentorship to improve my confidence and presentation skills. I look for opportunities to showcase my work.
Kristin Eckels, Global Alliance Leader:
Throughout my career the idea around visibility has been so important to me. So often in my early years I was the only woman in a room and as a younger person it was often overwhelming. There was little to no discussion around this which made it even more difficult. The focus on women being represented and "seated at the table" has had a huge impact on not only my personal career but in the way I have shown up as a mentor. I love to see the "table" changing as my daughters AND my son move into their careers!!
I would suggest for anyone at Trellix to do two things that will help increase their visibility, access and opportunity: Find a mentor and join one of our ERG's. As a member of the Women's Voice leadership team, I have had great opportunities to increase my visibility in the company and build relationships with the incredible members of the Women's Voice ERG.
Paola Chadwell, Vice President, Customer Success:
I've been incredibly fortunate in my career to have had strong women leaders take me under their wing and guide me early on. Their mentorship and support shaped my growth in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
Never underestimate the impact you can have simply by sharing your perspective, offering insight, or being a sounding board for someone navigating challenges.
Trish Tobin, Vice President, Product Marketing:
As of 2022, women held approximately 25% of cybersecurity jobs globally. As a leader, I strive to create diverse teams. But I still find the candidate pool is limited. Why?
During college tours with my kids, I was struck by how young women still express concern about the ratio of male to female students in STEM programs. Why?
While there are many systemic issues to be addressed, I believe "you can't be what you can't see.” I'm passionate about making women more visible in cyber and am doing my part to speak at conferences, high school and college career events -- and even encouraging the young women I met while on college tours. Will you join me?
Closing:
From the women at Trellix, we've learned about the challenges they have faced. We encourage individuals and organizations alike to foster inclusivity by offering mentorship, supporting employee resource groups, and actively championing the growth of others. Together, we can drive meaningful change and build a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
